Ken
Lipartito Dr.
Kenneth J. Lipartito received his Ph.D. from the Johns
Hopkins University in 1986. A specialist in business
and economic history, he has held positions at Middlebury
College, Rice University, the University of Houston,
and presently as Chair of the Department of History at
Florida International University. In 1991-92 he was Newcomen
Fellow at the Harvard Business School.
He is the author of three books,
most recently Investing for Middle America: John
Elliott Tappan and the Origins
of American Express Financial Advisors. His 1991 volume,
Baker & Botts in the Making of Modern Houston received
the T. H. Fehrenbach Award in Texas History. In 1989
he published The Bell System and Regional
Business: The Telephone in the South. His articles have appeared in
the American Historical Review, the Journal
of Economic History, Industrial and Corporate
Change and the Business History Review. His work has been supported by the National
Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science
Foundation, and recognized with awards from the Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Society
History of Technology. In 2000 he received the Harold
Williamson Prize from the Business History Conference.
