Joyce
Elam
Dr. Joyce J. Elam is Executive Dean and
James L. Knight Professor of Management Information Systems
in the College of Business Administration and the
Alvah H. Chapman, Jr., Graduate School ofBusiness at FIU.
She was previously an associate professor at the University
of Texas and an assistant professor at the University of
Pennsylvania's Wharton School. Dr. Elam was a Marvin Bower
Fellow at the Harvard Business School during 1987-88. She
earned both her Ph.D. in operations research (1977) and
her BA in mathematics (1970) from the University of Texas.
Dr. Elam has published extensively in
the areas of the strategic use of information technology,
the management of the information services function, and
the use of information technology to support both individual
and group decision-making. These articles have appeared
in such journals as Decision Sciences, Decision Support
Systems, Information System s Research, Operations
Research, and MISQ. She is co-author of the book, Transforming
the IS Organization, published by ICIT Press. Dr. Elam
isa frequent speaker on management information systems
topics at national
and international meetings. Dr. Elam also has extensive
experience in
executive development programs and in consulting.
Dr. Elam serves as FIU’s representative
on the Beacon Council and is a Trustee of the Greater Miami
Chamber of Commerce, chairs its Multinational Business
Committee, and serves on the Chamber’s
IT Task Force Group.
Dr. Elam also chairs the University Council
of the Florida Venture Forum and serves on the Board of
the South Florida Technology Alliance. She is actively
involved with the Miami Internet Alliance and with the
Internet Coast initiatives and is a founding member of
IT Women. Recently, Dr. Elam was appointed to the Corporate
Advisory Board of the Association of Latino Professionals
in Finance and Accounting and to the Board of Directors
of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs. She serves on
an AACSB International Peer Review team and is an active
member of the Management Education Alliance, an organization
that brings together the resources of top U. S. business
schools and corporations to support business schools serving
minority students.
