 José R. Almirall, PhD
Dr. José R. Almirall is Entrepreneurial Academy Director, Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, the Associate Director of the International Forensic Research Institute and the Director of the interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Forensic Science at FIU. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from FIU, a M.S. in Chemistry from the U. of Miami, a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the U. of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and a Master of Public Administration from FIU.
He was a practicing forensic scientist at the Miami-Dade Police Department Crime Laboratory for 12 years, where he testified in over 100 criminal cases in state and federal courts, prior to his academic appointment at FIU in 1998. Professor Almirall has authored one book and over 55 peer reviewed scientific publications in the field of analytical chemistry and forensic chemistry. He has mentored more than 20 graduate students at FIU and he and his students have presented over 250 papers and workshops in the U.S., Europe, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
The interests of his research group include fundamental analytical chemistry and the development of analytical chemistry tools for use in forensic science. His group has filed several disclosures/patents from technology developed at FIU and received over $ 2.5 M in research funding from federal agencies such as the NSF and from private industry sources.
Professor Almirall and his group have received several awards including "best paper" recognitions at national and international scientific conferences and a "Young Investigator Award" from the International Association of Forensic Scientists in 1996. He serves on the editorial boards of 3 scientific journals in forensic chemistry, chairs the resource committee of Quality Forensics Inc., has chaired the accreditation commission of forensic science academic programs in the US from 2002-2005 and is a member of several national and international forensic chemistry working groups.
